We make the sunshine

‘Twas another cool grey day at camp (thank goodness no rain!)… And still the kids are playing outside with great spirits. To celebrate the weather (if you can’t beat it, join it) Inter Girls roasted marshmallows at the fire pit at the Circle of Benches after lunch, and again we served hot chocolate in my cabin to kids who went swimming  or windsurfing…. Senior Girls came to dinner wearing every plaid garment they all own… The LITs got back from trip and reported having a great time out there. When I asked about the weather, they said it only rained at night so they were fine. Talk about the glass half full!! What positive attitude on the part of our young leaders.

Today was Junior Girls special (half) day, Missing Celebrities… to hunt for. Lots of fun and silliness.

Tonight at dinner (spaghetti and meatballs, Caesar salad, garlic bread, chocolate cupcakes with vanilla icing and sprinkles) Andre the Tripping Director made a stirring farewell speech to honour and celebrate the kids going on a 10-day trip tomorrow. He ended with a Robert Service poem:

“Have you suffered, starved and triumphed, grovelled down yet grasped at glory, grown bigger in the bigness of the whole?

Let us probe the silent spaces, let us see what luck betides us, let us journey to a lonely land I know.

There’s a whisper in the night wind, there’s a star gleam to guide us. And the wild is calling to us…. let us go.”
