Today, we have our first staff takeover! We’re excited to share stories from Amanda (Head Ride), Emily (Counsellor), and Tara (White Water Tripper) as they reflect on their experiences so far at camp.
Amanda, Head Ride
What’s been the highlight of camp for you so far this summer?
The excitement from the campers for our program has been amazing. Seeing everyone come to the activity with such positivity makes me feel like I’m doing something right. It’s also helped me regain my passion for riding. Plus, being able to be goofy with the kids again has been so much fun!
How do you keep the campers engaged and excited throughout the day?
I try to mix things up a lot. We have special days and I like to change up the lesson plans, types of trails we go on, and games we play. I also ask the campers what they want to do during the period. They all have different skill levels and interests, so I personalize the experience for each camper.
Can you share a moment this summer when a camper surprised you or made you proud?
Every day brings surprises! One standout moment was with Ophelia from the Dragonflies. She was terrified of horses but loved them so much. Working with her led her to getting onto her first-ever horse bareback. It was such a rewarding experience.
What do you look forward to the most every day at camp?
Seeing the campers grow. I get excited every day to watch them learn new skills and see what they’ll do with their summer. I’m so invested in helping the kids get as much out of the program as possible.
Tara, White Water Tripper
What’s been the highlight of camp for you so far this summer?
Watching all the campers face their fears in the rapids. They’re terrified at first, but seeing them grow and push themselves out of their comfort zones in such a scary environment is really amazing.
Can you share a moment this summer when a camper surprised you or made you proud?
Abby from the Bears didn’t know how to paddle at the beginning of the trip. She asked questions, jumped in a boat, and really impressed me with her determination. She wasn’t scared and just went for it, which made me really proud.
What do you look forward to most this summer?
Learning new things about different environments. Last year I was a flat water tripper and this year I’m on white water, it’s been an incredible experience.
Emily, Counsellor
What’s been the highlight of camp for you so far this summer?
Tonight was amazing! My kids performed their air bands, and they absolutely killed it! Seeing them all in black on stage brought tears to my eyes. I’ve had them for two summers now, and they feel like family. I felt like a proud mom!
How do you keep the campers excited throughout the day?
I hype them up for the little things by being excited myself!
Can you share a moment when a camper surprised you or made you proud?
Last summer, one of my campers went for her seconds in dance. She invited only a few close people, she’s an incredible dancer and worked really hard. I was so proud of her!
What do you look forward to the most every day at camp?
Not knowing what my day will consist of. I love waking up and discovering that I could be climbing or going on the mega SUP. I also look forward to hearing about my campers’ days and their individual experiences. Those small, casual conversations always make me smile.
