Land Acknowledgement

At Arowhon, our values are shaped by the land we call our summer home. In the heart of Algonquin Park, Camp Arowhon is located on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg peoples. This land of forests, lakes, rivers, and stone has been cared for by Indigenous communities for generations, long before we arrived. The beauty and resources that make camp life possible today exist because of the deep knowledge, stewardship, and cultural practices of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg, whose relationship with this land continues despite the lasting impacts of colonization.

We honour these connections in the ways we live at camp—from the canoes we paddle, rooted in Indigenous design, to the animals that inspire our section names, reflecting Anishinaabeg clan traditions. We also acknowledge that much of the camping industry in Ontario and beyond is built on Indigenous traditions and symbols that were often taken without permission or consultation. Recognizing this history calls us to be thoughtful, accountable, and intentional in how we use, reference, and learn from these traditions today.

We are committed to caring for this land with respect, learning its history, and engaging in meaningful reconciliation by listening to, learning from, and partnering with local Indigenous people. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather on this land, and we take seriously our responsibility to remember whose home this is, and to act with respect, humility, and care.
