Camper Communication

Staying Connected While Your Child is at Camp Arowhon.

Communication, Mail, and Updates from Our Screen-Free Community

Sending your child to overnight camp is a leap of trust, and we want you to feel confident knowing they are safe, supported, and thriving. While Camp Arowhon is a screen-free environment, we have clear systems in place to keep you informed, and to help your camper feel connected to home in meaningful, developmentally appropriate ways.

How we keep you informed

At Camp Arowhon, your child’s emotional and physical wellbeing is our top priority. Here’s how we make sure you’re kept in the loop:

New Camper Calls

If your child is attending Arowhon for the first time, you will receive a phone call during the first three days of their session to update you on how they are settling in. If we are unable to reach you directly, we will leave a voicemail.

Session End Updates

Every custodial household receives a personalized phone call or email during the final week of camp from your child’s Section Head or Head Counsellor.

If Your Child is Struggling

We commit to contacting you promptly if your child is experiencing emotional or physical difficulties (e.g., significant homesickness or illness). We will reach out directly to work through any concerns together.

Please note: We ask parents to avoid calling camp for general updates unless there are exceptional circumstances. Our team is often outdoors with campers and will return calls within 24 hours.

Sending and Receiving Mail at Camp

Letters TO AND from Camp

You can you use regular mail to send letters to and from camp, or sign up for Bunk1 - a third party provider that facilitates expedited 2-way communication (typed letters from parents that we print and give to campers, and handwritten letters from kids that we scan and send to parents multiple times per week).

To encourage regular communication, campers participate in weekly letter-writing during a supervised “letter-writing lock-in” after lunch with postcards we provide.

Mailing Tips for Parents

  • Begin mailing letters before camp starts so they arrive during the first few days
  • Use stamped, pre-addressed envelopes to make it easier for your child to write home (or pre-purchase Bunk1 replies for kids to send).
  • If you live outside Canada, we’ll apply postage to your camper’s outgoing letters as needed.

Package policy: keeping camp simple & special

In order to reduce allergy risk, social conflict, and materialism, we have a firm no non-essential package policy.

  • If an essential item must be sent (e.g. glasses, goggles, toiletries, medication), email our office in advance to arrange delivery
  • All non-essential packages will be returned to sender at their expense
  • If unapproved items are found in approved envelopes, only essentials will be passed to the camper
Please inform friends and family (especially grandparents) of this policy to avoid unnecessary disappointment.

Throughout the summer, we regularly post updates and stories from camp life on our Camp Arowhon Blog. While we do not post camper photos for privacy and safety reasons, the blog is a great way to stay connected with what’s happening at camp.
