Leadership & Skill Development
We Don’t Just Build Skills. We Build Leaders.
From their first canoe stroke to their first time leading younger campers, every child at Arowhon is on a path—from trying to thriving, from learning to leading. We teach real skills with care and intention, because we know that mastery fuels confidence, and confidence grows into courage. That’s how Arowhon campers become not just stronger swimmers or climbers, but stronger, more well-rounded people.
Why Is Skill-Building at the Heart of Arowhon?
Because Mastery Feels Good.
We make space for challenge because that’s where the magic is. When campers stretch themselves, puzzle through a tricky maneuver, or finally nail that climb they couldn’t do last week, you can see them light up from the inside out. They may go home with a sailing badge or a high ropes award. But what they’ve really earned? The pride that comes from trying, failing, and getting back up again. That’s what we mean by fun at Arowhon. Not just laughs (though there’s plenty of those), but the deep, lasting kind of fun that comes from growing into your own strength. When kids fall in love with learning, they take that spark with them, far beyond the last day of camp.
How We Approach Skills and Learning
Arowhon instructors are trained to work with campers at every level, from nervous beginners to seasoned experts. Their goal is to make every child feel safe, supported, and inspired to reach further. We don’t believe in pushing kids to compete with others. Instead, we celebrate personal bests. Our Arowhon Awards System invites campers to earn 3rd, 2nd, and 1st class levels in each activity, working toward milestones that matter to them. As campers grow in confidence and competence, something shifts. They stop just learning, they start leading.
We’re Not Just Teaching Activities.
We’re Growing Leaders.
At Camp Arowhon, leadership isn’t just for older campers. It’s woven into the way we teach, play, and grow together. Campers learn to lead by example, to lift each other up, and to take responsibility for their own learning. For those ready to go deeper, our Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Program offers a powerful next step.
Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Program
The LIT program is for 16-year-olds who are ready to begin the journey from camper to leader. It’s a bridge between experiencing camp and shaping it. LITs spend their time building real-world skills in communication, collaboration, and responsibility while still enjoying the magic of camp life. LITs will:
- Work alongside younger cabin groups to build mentorship skills.
- Assist in activities and learn foundational teaching techniques.
- Participate in leadership seminars focused on self-awareness, group dynamics, and emotional intelligence.
- Gain skills in communication, conflict resolution, behaviour management, and more.
They still get to play. They still take part in activities. But they also learn what it means to be someone younger campers look up to and how to step into that role with integrity.
Ready for the Summer of a Lifetime?
When a camper learns a new skill, they’re learning how to trust themselves. To make decisions.
To keep going when the wind picks up. That’s the kind of growth that changes a kid. That’s the kind of summer we believe in.
