It’s no wonder everyone’s favourite day at camp is Circus Day.
The energy was electric from the very start. Before breakfast had even finished, circus clowns, a tiger tamer, and zebra-striped golf carts rolled up to the front of the Main Lodge, giving campers a glimpse of the theatrics that awaited them later in the day.
Despite the silver sunshine all morning, the energy around camp was electric. A little rain never stopped an Arowhon camper from having a great time… we put on our bathing suits, jumped in puddles, and danced in the rain.
By the afternoon, the circus had officially arrived.
The Main Lodge was filled with inflatable obstacle courses, the porch featured an array of carnival food booths, including cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn, and funnel cake fries. And out front was an epic foam party, slip-and-slide off the sail dock runway, and of course soft serve ice cream from Tepee Treats. Campers got their faces painted, sent each other soak-o-grams, bobbed for apples, and had lots of sugar-fuelled fun.
As incredible as the afternoon was, the evening got even more hype with the epic Magen Boys dance party.
Every year, these energetic performers transform Rustic Lounge into the ultimate disco, and every year they get the whole camp dancing with complete abandon as if nobody was watching. We flailed our arms to Party in the U.S.A., dropped low to Apple Bottom Jeans, and jumped our hearts out to Starships. Campers of all ages danced together joyfully, while those who preferred a quieter activity enjoyed a chess tournament, frisbee toss, or roasted marshmallows around the campfire.
When the final song arrived, everyone instinctively threw their arms around one another as Mr. Brightside echoed through the room, with everyone singing together. We ended the night with sweat beading on our foreheads, sore feet from endless dancing, and hearts full of gratitude for the joy that camp brings.
Circus Day reminds us that you’re never too old or too cool to put on a silly costume, enjoy fun food, and dance your heart out.
