Energy is running high as we enter the last week of camp.
Cheering resounds from all corners of camp as campers achieve high class awards. Our traditional way of telling campers if they passed their test is by pushing them in the lake and all their friends jump in to celebrate with them, so half the camp is walking round wearing lifejackets “just in case” – a sight to behold. A particularly special moment was the standing ovation as a Salamander was carried into the Main Lodge still soaking wet from his successful first class archery test – an almost unheard of feat at that age! In the years after COVID I worried about the decline in achievement and ambition in kids and staff, and we saw a significant drop in the number of high class awards, but after this summer I can confidently say that we’re past that blip and campers are as skilled and driven as ever!
And speaking of ambition, the 10 day senior canoe trip got back today after an epic adventure down the Petawawa river, and received a well-deserved royal greeting, with the whole Point and Curve sections jumping in the lake to greet the incoming canoes.
The second heat of our annual sailing regatta (Wayne Peck, named after alumni sailing instructors) was held at Rest Hour, and the top 2 boats from each qualifier are excited for the showdown in the finals in the coming days.
Mini Campers also had a great day today getting to choose their own activities and experience what it’s really like to be an Arowhon camper (including the opportunity to work towards activity awards and enjoy soft serve ice cream at Tepee Treats).
While we’re sad that it’s already time to say goodbye to our Mini Campers tomorrow, we’re so excited to see what the next week of camp brings!
