Today was totally jam packed with special camp moments.
From the first ever recipient of the new Arowhon Classic award (recognizing skills and commitment in diverse areas of camp, ranging form portaging a canoe to performing in a camp play), to the triumphant Inter long trip return, to a 15 year old girl completing a solo overnight for her first class award in tripping, the day was full of accomplishment and pride.
And it just kept getting better as the day went on.
Evening activity tonight was Arowhon-a-Palooza, our annual music and dance showcase, and this year was really one for the record books. Incredibly choreographed dance performances by various different camper groups garnered oohs and aahs and standing ovations, and powerful songs from incredibly talented voices of all ages moved us to tears. One of the things I love about Palooza is that it gives an opportunity for the kids who aren’t the most sporty or outdoorsy to really shine and be celebrated. The showstopper of the night was the all new Arowhon Rock Band, featuring Salamanders on keyboard and drums, a Loon on electric guitar, a Moose on acoustic, and vocals by a Bear. Seeing the range of ages, genders, and personalities working together to create beautiful harmony was a perfect illustration of what our community has become in the last 7 weeks.
After Palooza, we were confused to find ourselves in the middle of a Viking invasion, and followed the intruders down to the Main Lodge to find out what was going on. On our way, we got to witness a newborn dragon and an epic sea battle, all previews for the main show to come: a truly epic Colour War break skit featuring fire breathing dragons, warriors shooting flaming arrows, and the much-anticipated announcement of this year’s theme: How to Train your Dragon.
Campers are having a hard time falling asleep tonight with all the excitement that the coming days hold!
