Tortillas and 10 year jackets

Tonight’s campfire was the epitome of camp.

It started with an 8 year old girl singing an off-key solo in front of 500 people who listened silently and gave her a standing ovation.

Continued with me getting tortilla slapped (a viral trend I now now about) by an 11 yr old boy and spitting water all over his face.

Ended with 10 year jacket speeches from a group of 18 year old boys who reminded us of how far they’ve come since they first stepped off the camp bus, and that they are here today to foster that growth in their own campers.

Here’s an excerpt from one of them that made me so grateful for the opportunity to participate in this most important work: growing kids.

Nobody at Arowhon ever told me to be confident. They just handed me opportunities and supported me through everything they believed I could do, until I believed it too.

Ten years later, the best part of my job is watching that same thing happen to my campers. I get to be the person who says what my counsellors once said to me: You’ve got this.

Camp is the perfect mix of silly, vulnerable, challenging, and all the other things most kids don’t get enough of at home, and on days like today we wish it could last all year long.
