Arowhon wins family business award

Camp Arowhon is proud to announce that we won the Family Enterprise of the Year Award given by Family Enterprise Xchange (FEX).

The FEX Family Enterprise of the Year Award recognizes significant achievements made by a Central Ontario Family Enterprise. The award showcases a family business that demonstrates many layers of success through drive, dedication, and commitment to employees and the community at large. It celebrates balancing the family, business and community contribution successfully.

Lillian Kates started Camp Arowhon in 1934. Her son Eugene Kates took over in 1946, and Eugene’s daughter Joanne Kates and her husband Leon Muszynski took over camp in 1989. Joanne and Leon’s adult children Mara Kates and Max Muszynski are now in training to replace Joanne and Leon as camp’s owners and directors. Mara’s husband Josh Darrach also works for the business.

For us, the Arowhon family, this award is a confirmation of what matters most to us: We are so grateful for our beloved Algonquin Park home, for the thousands of camp families who put their trust in us every summer, and for the camp staff who make dreams come true for children.

Working in a family business offers frequent opportunity both to deepen family relationships, and to grow. In order to keep this ship afloat into its 4th generation, we strive to practice communication, problem-solving and mutual support, both at work and at play together.
