The Green Leech Canoe Race

Some Juniors asked me at dinner tonight when the Green Leech  Canoe Race started. It was in the 1950’s, when some believed there was a green leech monster living across the lake near Green Leech Rock. Somebody challenged the camp to a race around Green Leech Island – to banish the monster… And so today we still do the Green Leech Canoe Race. Points are awarded for creativity. It was after dinner tonight – a staff in every camper boat, and crazy homemade craft rule the lake… There was a kiddy pool atop a floating raft towed by a kayak…. Two surfboards tied together with pool noodles…. One cabin floating on all their dry bags – inflated with a basketball pump! Santa Claus in a canoe being towed by a great many Senior Boy “reindeer” swimming…. A good time was had by all…. At dinner the Junior Boys Section Head – in a suit – proposed to the Junior Girls Section Head – in a real wedding dress… To announce Juniors Evening Activity, a dance-off…. Tomorrow morning Thom, our beloved nurse who’s been here 25 years and is an aficionado of the Group of Seven, is taking four Inter Boys horseback riding to the Tom Thomson grave site a few miles from camp…. Also tomorrow is the Curve Cooking Class wherein I teach the girls to make – from scratch – pasta with pesto, lemon garlic shrimp, steak and Greek salad….as I write this, I can hear the Inter Girls cabin beside my cabin telling the “roses and thorns” of their day… And in front of my cabin I can hear Senior Girls singing around the girls dock fire pit with a guitar playing….so much happens at camp!
