Juniors on Canoe Trip!

Right after lunch today, two great events occurred: The sun came out bright and strong, an all the Junior Girls and Boys left for a four-day canoe trip. Their trip leaders and counsellors had a different theme and costumes for each trip (Frozen, Pocahantas, Junior Boys Warriors etc.) with plans to teach the Juniors wilderness skills like setting up tents, collecting firewood and campfire cooking…. After the Juniors left I spent an hour teaching some of our advanced canoeists at the canoe dock. This experience gave me cause for reflection. As I worked with the canoeists on their standing pry stroke, a moment from 50 (!!) years ago came back to me: I’m 14 years old, a Senior Girl, and my counsellor Barbara Draimin is drilling me on the standing pry. Same stroke, same teaching, 50 years later. Such is the wheel of life at camp.
