An Arowhon Leader Speaks From the Heart

Last night, as the farewell to our 6 week and 2 week campers, there was a synchronized canoeing torch paddle – the magic of fire on water. After that in front of the whole camp, we presented Hayley Miller, a Head Counsellor, with her bookshelf made of half an Arowhon canoe, to honour this being […]

    It’s CAMP!

It’s tradition at camp to keep upcoming special days a secret from campers, and a favourite way to do that is by spreading false rumours about why Colour War/Circus Day etc. can’t happen this year (not enough cups in the ML, not enough water in the lake, etc.). We also LOVE a good joke so […]

    Perseverance and teamwork

A funny story… This afternoon a group of Inter Boys needed an activity at the last minute, so as a joke Max told them to go try to dump the Voyageur (our 50-person canoe). He should have known better than to propose a challenge to Arowhon campers! Although the task was comical, the perseverance, teamwork, […]

Camp Arowhon Vaccination Numbers… and Pop Up Vax Clinic August 6

We’ve been vaxing staff and campers (of course only with parental permission for campers) and we have camp vax stats: Of our 192 staff, 186 have had 1 vax and 181 have had both shots. Which means that 97% of our staff have one shot and 94% are double vaxed. Of the 328 campers now here […]

    It’s Camp!

Like many things this summer, changeover was less relaxing but more rewarding than ever before. At both pick up and drop off we were touched by all the parents literally crying tears of joy and relief in seeing their kids be able to finally be kids again. There is nothing quite so special after so […]

    Today’s Vax Bus

Huntsville Shoppers Drug Mart got Pfizer vaccine, so we arranged for camper vax. They’re vaxed! We’re so happy for them and for the community at large. Our vax bus with 25 campers and 7 under-18 staff left camp this morning right after breakfast, it went smooth as silk in Huntsville, and the kids were back […]

Tepee Lake: A place of healing

I awoke this morning at 6:30 to the sound of paddles thwacking on canoe gunwhales, and the happy shouts of kids exhorting each other: “Let’s go. Paddle… We got this!” And they do. It was the sound of 15-year-old campers and their counsellors training for the marathon Brent and Back canoe trip in mid August. […]

Some things about camp make me cry with joy

A few years ago, when Prime Minster Trudeau welcomed 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada, it occurred to me that as the grand-daughter of four refugees, it was my turn to take some responsibility for the refugees of today.  So in summer 2018 we started our Syrian refugee bursary programme and welcomed 11 Syrian campers to […]
